Severely Tuberculated 1880’s 10” Water Main
2022
THE PROBLEM:
The town of Milton was established in the 1880’s and has experienced frequent failures in its underground water system throughout the years. These decades old pipes suffer from heavy tuberculation covering the interiors of the water mains, causing leaks and reducing flow capacity. With pipes spread throughout residential areas, the town needed a quick and effective solution that offered minimal service disruptions to residents and avoided severe traffic issues.
OUR SOLUTION:
The town chose Spray in Place Solutions to camera, clean and coat 1,780 linear feet of 10” water main.
Spray in Place Solutions performed a camera inspection of the entire length of the pipe to identify the extent of the tuberculation throughout the lines. We utilized an innovative plan to weaken the tuberculation, first using forced hot air to remove moisture, which was acting as a binding agent. We then used a combination of drag scrapping and high-pressure water jetting to clean the pipes to their original diameter. After another round of camera inspection, the team reviewed their findings and moved ahead with the Spray-In-Place Pipe (SIPP) rehabilitation by coating the water main with 3mm of Warren Environmental’s NSF approved high-build epoxy. With our epoxy system’s single-coat application and fast cure times, the team was able to quickly move through neighborhoods, minimizing disruptions of service and disturbance to residents.
